AMD Radeon 4890 Problem

Go to solution Solved by Guest Generallee,

the bottom cards fan is loud when booting up but when in windows it sounds normal so I don't think it effects it

You could try to underclock them a little bit and see if it helps

I Know these cards are old, but I have two of them running in crossfire and the card on the bottom runs extremely hot. it runs much hotter than the card on the top which is usually meant to be the hotter card. I do not know if it is something to do with age but I have cleared the dust form the cooler with compressed air so I have eliminated the dust problem. Oh yes, and the card on the bottom cannot overclock. it will just crash the system with a blue screen. the 2 cards are rear exaust style

Main PC: ASUS PRIME X299-A / Core i7 7820X / 16GB DDR4 / Palit GTX 1070 Ti / Corsair CX550F / Corsair Carbide Air 540

Secondary PC: ASUS X99-A / Core i7 5820K / 16GB DDR4 / EVGA GTX 780 ti Classified / Corsair CX500M / Fractal Define S

New thermal paste is all I can think of. You completely stripped the coolers right?

I have checked the thermal paste on both of them. and the funny thing was the top one actually had less left that the bottom one. but yes, I applied new thermal paste 2 months ago.

Do you have any case fans blowing at them ? Make sure you have enough airflow in your case

I currently have the card in a system on its own to see what the temps are like when not in crossfire. I have also now underclocked it resulting in a 4 degrees c drop. running the card on its own also got a 3 degrees drop so under full load it now runs at 85 degrees c

ive underclocked it quite a lot now. the core is now it 650mhz and its running at 74 degrees c under full load which is apparently safe. im going to put my other card back in the system and see how it does

it is now in my system and im happy to report much lower temps. from underclocking, ive lost 2fps but that isnt a big deal.
