Hello, LinusTechTips Forum members!

I would like to ask your opinion/advice on a build I'm looking for but not quite sure it's the best/most safe. I'm not really any professional in this field because I only lookup this stuff when upgrading my PC.

Budget: ~1500 Euros max

Location: Latvia (the PC part retailers buy parts somewhere from Poland's warehouses, not sure which one is the best)

Aim: To be able to enjoy Witcher 3, GTA V and Batman: Arkham Night on maximum settings

Reason for upgrade: I cannot enjoy a great game anymore (like GTA V - my MSI GTX 560 Ti gives only max 30.0 FPS, big aim delay)

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster TA350 22" (would like to upgrade to one 144Mhz monitor with display port)

Peripherals: (not planning to upgrade; satisfied with them)

  • Keyboard: Corsair Vengeance K90
  • Mouse: Logitech G9X
  • Headphones: ROCCAT kave

Existing build:

  • Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z68A-D3H-B3
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz
  • GPU: MSI N650GTX-Ti TWIN FROZR II 2GD5
  • Memory: Corsair Dominator 8GB Dual Channel
  • Soundcard: Soundblaster Recon3D (waste of money for me because I can't tell any difference from on-board sound card)
  • SSD: Patriot Pyro 120GB and Samsung 250GB 840 EVO
  • PSU: Chieftec 750W 14CS
  • Case: Thermaltake VM3000 series V4 Black (not glad I bought it - no room for cable management, the mounts for HDDs/DVDs are not removable)

New build:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xkNLBm( my best try :) )

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core
  • CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
  • Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5
  • Motherboard: MSI Z97-GAMING 7 ATX LGA1150
  • Memory: Corsair Dominator GT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
  • Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD
  • Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V
  • Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze

My preferences:
  1. CPU: should be unlocked - overclock-able (high end but not the most expensive)
  2. CPU Cooler: price/performance
  3. GPU: I think the selected model is good price/performance
  4. Motherboard: good networking, isolated sound (from noises)
  5. Memory: I want to get 16GB with 4GB x 4 (2 already existing from old build)
  6. Case: with removable 2.5", 3.5" mounts to have better airflow, to be possible to add more 12mm silent fans
  7. Power Supply: to be able to overclock my CPU and Memory.

Plan:

Take out the 2 memory cards and 250 GB SSD from old build and put it in to the new build. The old PC probably will be given to my parents or something (will buy some reasonable 4GB memory).

Best regards,

jarmenz

P.S. Thanks for reading and I apologize for my first post being long  ^_^!

Your build is great ... You could go with the i7-4790K

Oh and also , change your Avatar because @Luclocke already has that avatar

... Life is a game and the checkpoints are your birthday , you will face challenges where you may not get rewarded afterwords but those are the challenges that help you improve yourself . Always live for tomorrow because you may never know when your game will be over ... I'm totally not going insane in anyway , shape or form ... I just have broken English and an open mind ...

Solid build but if you can go with 4790k (it is cheaper in us) and would recommend an evga psu

Thanks, I will think about the 4790K CPU! Why EVGA particularly?

Just use your current build, upgrade the PSU and GPU, motherboard and cooling.

Is it really safe to put new components like these on such an old build (> 3 years)?

As the others said, keep the CPU. Upgrade to a 2600k or 2700k if required, or keep the 2500k and overclock it. No need to upgrade the motherboard to do this. The differences from Sandy-Bridge to Haswell are minimal at best

Upgrade the PSU, and graphics card. GTX 970, R9 290X or similar, with an EVGA G2 750W, 850W, any XFX/Seasonic/Antec PSU

i5 4670k - Z87X-UD3H - EVGA GTX 670 Sig 2 - Samsung 840 Evo 250GB - 8GB Avexir Core White 1600Mhz - Corsair 750D w/ RGB LED Mod & Remote Control - 2x SP120 - 3x Enermax Cluster - 2TB Seagate SSHD - Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 - SuperFlower Leadex Gold 750W

Thanks for the advice. I think I will just upgrade the existing.

Why wouldn't it be?

Dunno really :), kind of old components.
