i played around with the wattage calculator in the sticky and i could technically get away with a 450w. building my system in there it should use 419w under peak load, not overclocked, is that cutting it too close? also if i ever add more hard drives it puts it at 446...

this box came with a massive 800w psu, with way too many wires coming out of it. this must be some kind of custom hack job. i may be very new to working on computers but id be surprised if any psu comes stock with a setup like this. one of the wires has 6 molex, 2x 3 pin, and a 4 pin, is that normal? they're all branching off each other and it looks terrible.

i bought a fang battlebox from cyberpower pc. it came with a 120mm all in 1 watercooler unit for the cpu. that radiator turned out to be far too large for the case and they actually had to bend part of the case to squeeze it in(putting a lot of pressure on the wires coming from the psu). last weekend i bought a noctua NH-D9L, it fits nicely inside and helped with cooling performance(took me 4 hours, i had never fully disassembled a computer before). but i don't think that is enough, cpu still exceeds 80 degrees playing far cry 4. i think its still to crowded by the massive power supply and excess wires. if i could find a smaller psu i could put another fan on the heat sink.

this is like a perfect storm of me not really doing enough research into exactly what i was buying and cyberpower having stupid options for parts. im actually not sure how you could make this use 800w, i couldn't even get the calculator over 700. they even had a 850w option... maybe overclocked titan x with the case placed in a commercial walk in freezer...

so would 450 be enough? i found this as well. http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/550-Watt-Micro-ATX-Power-Supply-Athena-AP-MP4ATX55FEP8.phpis that a good brand/product, i couldn't find much info on its quality, and it appears to be in a league of its own, witch worries me.

oh and here is my specs if it helps.

i7 4790k

evga superclocked gtx 980

gigabyte z97n-gaming5 mobo

1 ssd 240 gb, 1 7200 rpm sata 3tb

16gb Corsair Vengeance ddr3 ram, im not actually sure exact specs on this... i think i ordered 2133 mhz

What specs are the computer specifically? If it's a prebuilt "gaming" PC chances are it has a crappy "800W" PSU just to compensate for the fact that the PSU likely can't deliver it's full rated wattage, same reason why on the box of a 290 it says you need a 750W when in reality a good quality 550W is perfectly adequate

updated with specs and found another psu that looks great but received some bad reviews. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256109&cm_re=450w_power_supply-_-17-256-084-_-Product

Get this PSU. Its a tier 1 and the OEM is seasonic.

get a lower wattage higher efficiency rated one, bronze psus often rattle and have a low lifespan, i speak from my own experience too

Bronze and gold and that rating just tell you how efficient a psu is at utilizing the power coming from the wall. There are bronze PSUs that will be better for your system than a gold one. In the end its all about the power for the 12v rail(s) and quality of the parts inside the PSU.

yeah, but the lower rated ones use cheaper components like fans that rattle and then die after few weeks

The XFX Core edition power supplies (Seasonic made) use the same fan throughout the range 450W - 850W. Seasonic also use the same fan in the S12II. Maybe if you buy something cheap and nasty you might get something that gives up the ghost. Not all power supplies are made equal though  :)

ok thanks for the replies everyone, and to Griffscavern that psu is almost exactly the same size as the one i have already, its .3 inch smaller. i need something at least an inch and a half smaller. it looks like all the really good psu are about the same size from 450-800w. so it seems a really high quality solution dosent exist for my case. i should have made that more clear that by size i meant physical dimensions as well.

i figured the heat problem out, cyberpower had the cpu voltage turned all the way up to 1.345, and never increased the clock speed(making it much harder for my noob eyes to detect)... so under load it was drawing 130w. so it turns out the power supply being too big in my case wasn't a problem after all... even in my now somewhat warm and humid room the cpu is barely going above 70 degrees under load. and maxing at 99w. that's with my fans at near silent levels too. im so happy, and will probably never buy a prebuild again.

however i still think i want to get a new psu, and a small one, i really want to put that 2nd fan on my heat-sink. so i can experiment with overclocking myself. i think im gonna give cyberpower a call, i could forgive them for a lot of the derpy stuff they did when putting together this computer but this just seems over the top.

i just read a review on the silverstone sx600, it really is the perfect size (half the width of what i have now) but its not all Japanese caps(not that i really grasp the full gravity of what that means anyway). so i guess id be rolling the dice on it, but im probably gonna go with that one. hopefully me only running it at maybe 500w max will help it last. it has received some good reviews too ive found. but hey, at least its gold rated :P
