hey im new here a longtime linus sub hope it ok to just jump in and start asking questions
anyway i have a selfbuilt not much older than 2 years and it has been stable and awesome till now

there was a massive storm and power went out all over the grid, but my street was fine we did not loose power once throughout the storm.

so i thought all was fine and continued gaming all was sweet stable good temps and ran fine, then i shut it down like normal (Windows Shutdown Leaving PSU switch on,surge protector and mains switches on because the modem is also in the surge protector) and went to sleep, work the next day and come home to find it wont power on.

after googling and stressing for about an hour it finally came to life, now every time i turn it off for hours then try to boot, it will hang and not post.

the led's and fans spin up late or it just wont respond to the button at all.

then i switch all my power off, starting from the psu down then back on the opposite way waiting like 10 seconds in-between and it seems to boot fine.

but once it is on it is stable, able to run even the most demanding games with several background apps.

i have switched my surge protector for another because the first one was tripping when the pc was acting up

(the only other time it has shut down randomly before this was when i bumped my table really hard with my knee)

(other possible problem is i clean with this http://www.canlessair.com/the industrial version not the esd one as when i bought it there was no esd safe in stock)

I was thinking of getting a ups to see if the Australian power is the issue its kind of sketchy no fuses in plugs maybe a dirty current but i use a 860w psu and have no idea of the actual load its under so i don't know what va ups i need.

i am at a loss and cant afford to replace also don't have access to another PC to test parts

warranty is an option as i am in most of my warranty brackets but what part to send off first

sorry if this is long winded i wanted to provide all my diagnostics without have to be asked

heres an idea i want you to try first....ALWAYS works for me after a storm of sorts.

shut down computer. flip the switch on the psu to O. pull the power cord....wait 1 min. plug cord back in. flip switch. boot up

tell me your results. ususally theres already power in your mobo left over from such because its still comming in i guess even with the switch off and such...but ususally when i cut all power from it and let it drain out and run off the cmos battery it fixes it a ususal 90% of the time.

EDIT: if you wanna go the extra mile to regulate normal power...unplug the surge protector from the wall also. couldve had an odd buildup.

my dads an electrician..he tells me this random kind of info.

You're more than welcome to come straight in and ask questions - Heck most of us probably did :P

If there is an issue with posting, the issue probably lies between the Power Supply, Motherboard & CPU. You could try removing all other parts of the build and that might narrow it down to one of those 3 parts (You can also attempt to post without the CPU installed which can narrow it down to the Motherboard or Power Supply. I'd try going through those parts first. I've had a lot of storms here but my AX760 seems pretty content with the surges (our power is much higher voltage than the USA's). Anyway If you go through this, you can most likely figure it out. I'm not familiar with the GD65 (I used the GD45 previously) but I'm fairly sure there are some built in tests that might help diagnose broken parts.

Welcome to the forums by the way, remember to follow your threads! :)

^ yeah do that too if what i suggested doesnt work...unplug the psu cords to the cpu and 24-pin cord..and reseat RAM

computers are contrary sometimes :P

i also love that little LED xD but :P still not bad to do all this unplugging and regulating after a storm regardless. could be a build up in the surge protector. its very likely.

Exactly, so unplugging the power supply and trying to turn it on should hopefully release any stored energy from the Capacitors which'd help. I knew taking IB Physics would come in handy one day.

after a storm its never bad to dissipate charges :P lets just hope he see's this stuff eh?

wow thanks for the fast replys so this is not hardware killing to keep it running?

but may be either the power buildup or a failing hardware..

ok i will try the power cycle thing next cold boot tomorrow after work i will post back with the results when i get them

but im still on for a few more ideas if anyone has any

glad i joined now

ok i will have to grab that antistatic mat/strap and get to pulling parts thanks so much ThatCoolBlueKidd/Ryouichi Kiriyami

It probably isn't, but it's worth fixing anyway. Either way you've either got some stored power in a capacitor somewhere or you've got a dead PSU/Motherboard/CPU, but if you go through the recommendations we gave you, you should be A-Okay :)

well blu. he said it does boot up it just take sa long time and theres alot of problems. so cpu and mobo  are working...if there IS a hardware problem its the PSU.

i was thinking that also because

if i had an issue with my psu i would randomly shutdown while gaming right?

if it was the cpu, temps would be of or it would be slow or just not work outright

if it was the mobo i don't know the signs

i don't understand what's causing it i just turned of xmp in the bios to test that next cold boot

the problem is its intermittent and i dont know how long it takes to get to that state so its really hard to test will take weeks

to clarify once its booted properly it runs flawlessly

I have a couple of recommendations.

A. get a UPS of some sorts, $60 USD ones are great for "powe-outage protection"

B. ALWAYS shut the power-supply switch off after a storm.

C. Maybe get a different PSU, I know sometimes those things can take quiet a shock during a storm.

-update-

i tried to power on today and it just wont post and i can hear electrical arcs from i think the psu

so i think its safe to assume that lightning damaged one of my rails on the psu or something

alas i dont have another one laying arount to fully test so i will have to rma and wait thanks for your info and help
