So I am looking to get a new gpu, cpu, some more ram, possibly new power supply if needed, also a new MoBo if needed.

Current specs:

Radeon HD 6850 GPU

AMD FX 4100 quad core CPU

6gb ram

Asus m5a97 mobo

650w power supply(dont know brand)

So I was planning on going for a r9 280 and was wondering which parts are great with it. I am planning on playing high end games, gta 5, bf4, far cry 4, dying light etc....

I already play those games on this current rig but I am looking for some more stable performance and not on the lowest possible settings ;)

First off, make sure you actually NEED a new CPU.

Here are the ones I'd recommend

Xeon E3 1231 V3 (i7 at i5 price but locked)

Cheap Xeon E3/ Core i5

Seeing if you actually need it.

For that 280 do a comparison to the 960, yes it's 2GB but it is definitely faster and should be a better value plus It sips power and has Nvidia features.  If you can find the 960 for a little more or less I'd highly recommend it no matter what brand, cooler, and clock it has.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

Yeah, on 2015 just recommend a 2gb 128bit bus card. That makes a lot of sense even if in some games it just beats a stock clocked 280 by 1 or 2 fps.

I cannot recommend any refurb as there is no guarantee that it will work.

Maxwell is a new architecture.  The 8800 GTX was a 256-bit card.  Does that make it faster than the 960?

Does the 2GB makes the 960 slower than the 280?

The 960 is also a FANTASTIC overclocker.

It beats a 280 by 6-8 FPS.

1. 960 is slower...

2. 280 has a better value

3. Nvidia features? Physx/Shield is the only ones left that are special

It beats a 280 marginally in some games and it is also more expensive.

It's also a joke of a "sweet spot" gpu launched in 2015 with only 2gb of vram being marginally better than a 760 and worse than a 770 and gaining 2 or 3 fps on a stock 3 year old gpu.

Does the 2GB makes the 960 slower than the 280?

lolwat, you do know games are needing more and more vram at even 1080p and the 960 has texture issues in more demanding games, right?

But fuck texture quality, as long as you have 2 or 3fps more.

Anyway, are you paid to shill nvidia or do you do it for free?

Ok, so what I have come to conclusion that I will most likely be getting a 280 or 280x I will do some price searching. an i5 4590 or the 4690 will still do some price research. A mobo compatible with the two and what about power supply? will mine suffice or should I upgrade to 750w

Any Z97 board is good nowadays, if you're going for the 4690k. Which you should, honestly.

As for the PSU, I'd recommend something from a known brand with at least bronze rating. 550w is enough for a 280X if the PSU is good quality, if you aim on OCing in the future get a 650w.

Question:

Answer:

But you really need to crack your case and see how many PCI-E connections are available for a GPU from your PSU. Also verify if your case can fit a long GPU by measuring.

The model of the PSU is always handy. It's hard to tell you if it is good enough, it could be a Deer for all we know. 650w should be fine, if it's a reputable make and model, for a 280 or 280x. For reassurance, my GF has a Rosewill Capstone 550 for her HD 7970, which is a 280x.

I am pretty sure this is the one I bought when I built my current pc

Never heard of that brand. Googled a bit about it and it doesn't seem to be reliable at all. I'd say ditch that and buy another PSU.

Any XFX psu is seasonic oem, which is pretty good and quite cheap compared to Seasonic branded PSUs. So go for that if you're sticking to a budget.

Even a cheaper Corsair CX will suffice.
