Black screen issue

Right I have built a gaming pc recently.

 

I am having a wierd issue with Windows 8 pro, the screen would suddenly go black and yet I can still see and move my mouse cursor. It has happened twice now so far. The only way to solve currently is to hard reset the machine but I dont want to keep doing that because I will end up corrupting my new hard drive. My display connection is through hdmi 1.4 to hdmi 2.0 on the gpu.

 

Specs are below

 

intel core i5 4690k

16gb ddr3 1600mhz 

gigabyte ga z97pd3

asus strix 970

1tb sshd

 

I need suggestions asap on how to solve this.
