I recently salvaged a dell xps gen 5 it has 4gb ram 2 ide drives 1 sata drive 2 sata dvd drives a sound blaster sound card a nvidia quadro fx 4500 and a tv tuner for a cpu it has a pentium d i would like to get this running to i have something to tinker with and something to capture tv and video with the problem i run into is when i go to install windows i have tried both xp and 7 it tells me it is unable to find a drive when i have went into the bios and it shows the drives i have tried changing it from pata or what ever it is called to ata and all of the options in the sata mode section in the bios the only thing it did is made it find it in xp and when i tried to click continue it said un able to access drive and it only showed one of the 3 drives then after i clicked continue it crashed please help

Ok, so the problem might be that the drives are going bad. Take out the 2 Ide drives (they're waaaayyyy outdated and are bound to fail eventually) then go into the bios, turn on smart reporting, and make sure the SATA drive is set to AHCI, then try installing windows. Also make sure that your SATA drive is plugged into drive 0
