How many CPU cores?

Go to solution Solved by minibois,

How many CPU cores do you need for gaming, and or video editing/rendering? Like some of the higher things that would take more cores - I the minimum should be about 4 but what amount shouldn't be?

Rendering usually means more=better

Gaming just wants a few fast, close to 4 four preferably.

It depends on your budget though. Low end: AMD Athlon X4 860K (a quad core CPU), mid end: i5 4690K (quad core), High end: i7 4790K (Quad core+ hyper threading), extreme end: i7 5960X (8 core + hyper threading)

This video may help:

At the moment, unless you're playing GTA V on a high end setup, you won't benefit from more than 4 cores for gaming.

Rendering will use as much power as you have so assuming you can get more of the same power cores, the more cores the better for rendering. Streaming you kinda want as many cores as you can have but you also want to have good single-core performance.

Sig under construction.

Well the last CPU I mentioned is 1K USD and may just be way overkill... At least for gaming, depends on what you render.

Inbetween the 4790K and the 5960X you also have the i7 5820K and i7 5930K CPU's, which are 6 core + hyper threading CPU's and they are not as expensive as the 5960X CPU.

The 4790K is just a beast CPU in per core performance

:P I don't know a whole lot about Xeon CPU's, so I'm never comfortable recommending them
