So I have a Maximus VI Formula and the thing has a m.2 port but it says it only has a connection of PCI2 1x so would that not mean it would be the same speed as a Sata 3 port just making sure I got my facts strait.

It will have the speed of SATA Express, which is 10 Gb/s. SATA 3 is 6 Gb/s.

Sorry, I thought you have Maximus VII Formula.

PCIe 2.0 1x has 4 Gb/s through put.

So a SSD on a Sata connection would be better.

Yea I would love the Maximus VII formula with the copper MOSFET cooler so I don't have to buy a EK block to replace the aluminum one when I put in a loop but I got the board brand new for 200$ from the classified ads.

Yeah, just a normal 2.5" SSD with SATA 3 6Gb/s will be faster.

The Maximus VI is still an excellent mobo.

Hey Sam Z Man,

As @Deli pointed out, a regular SATA SSD would have greater speeds using the SATA 3 (6Gb/s) compared to the PCI2 1x connection. You can actually fit a M.2 SSD for your OS or to simply cache your HDD for better performance. :)
