I just ordered four new 3TB WD Reds to put in my RAID1 array (was going to change types once they arrived) and noticed something important...

My array was degraded! Apparently one of my drives is failed. IRST diagnoses it as Port 2. According to the WD Red Customer Support, I can uplug the failed drive and the array willl still function as it currently is, until I can add the new drive. However, if I unplug the good drive, the array will collapse and the good drive will not function either.

This wouldn't be a problem, but since my OS is a RAID0 and the ports are numbered in order from the boot drive, not from physical location... I don't know which of my 840s is 0, so I don't know which of my Reds is 2. Eek.

I always thought you could just unplug a RAID1 drive and use it as normal...? WD is telling me that's a bad idea. Suggestions?
