Which has more Performance?

Go to solution Solved by TechFan@ic,

Straight up better FPS isn't always better, two 780s will be better, because you lose scaling going from dual to triple card configurations, you also lose 2/3 of your 770s' performance when you happen to stumble upon a game that outright doesn't support SLI like Hitman Absolution.
Two 780s will also be smoother than three 770s & you get more VRAM.

You also get exactly the same amount of CUDA cores either way ( 2x2304 = 4608, 3x1536 = 4608) but like I said you lose more performance scaling with the third 770.

I will be playing on 1 1920x1200p screen, and I want to know what will have straight up better FPS. Should I go with Tri 770's, or dual 780's? I know this is not necessary to go SLI with 1 1080P screen, but I might go with nVidia Surround. I will be watercooling and overclocking all of the GPU's and my CPU.

I think triple will have better FPS but not much more than dual 780

Tri 770's will be cheaper than dual 780's by about $100.

Does Vram usage get spread across 3 cards, or does it use the same amount of vram like you're using one card?

EDIT: Most of the games I play will most likely support SLI. I usually play FPS games like BF3, BF4 when it comes out, Crysis series, etc, etc...

Hitman Absolution didn't support SLI because it's an AMD gaming evolved title, BF4 is also a gaming evolved title, so you never know if you'll actually get SLI support.

Memory usage is exactly as if you're using one card, because each card has to load all of the textures, shaders & all sorts of data.

So no, memory usage does not spread across more cards.

Oh, so if I were to have 3GB of Vram usage on 1 card, it will still be 3GB of usage on 3 cards instead of 1GB, correct?

I can't believe people are recommending 3 770s over 2 780s that's so horribly bad advice.
2 780s are better in every way, faster, smoother, consume waaay less power and like tech said, you still get great performance even if the game doesn't support sli.
