I'm looking to buy a new gpu, to replace my old 6970...

I've been getting screen flickers lately, on my ROG Swift, even when just sitting on the desktop, and recently when I reformatted my computer, I got an error saying it can't run at max refresh rate, so currently using a $1000 screen at 60hz :/

The only games I play at the moment are GW2 ( I know it's heavily cpu bound ) and CS:GO, neither of which really need any sort of awesome-sauce gpu power. I do however want to buy GTA V for me and the missus soon, and run it at fairly high settings and at a decent refresh rate.

Do I save myself some money and just get a 970, or fork out an extra $300+ for a 980, (I live in Australia, so prices are kitten).

If I get a 970 I was thinking of chucking in a custom water cooling loop with the money I saved, which will probably end up happening either way somewhere down the track.

What resolution? If 1080p or 1440p, the 970. If higher, then the 980

He said he has a ROG swift, which is 1440p 144hz.

I'd recommend going with a GTX 980.

Now going with a 4K panel and playing games such as BF4 and BFH I would say go with 980 if you're going for 4k. I get stuttering like crazy if I go on 4k on my SLI 970 on high intensive Vram games.

Same. Just sold one of my 970. Going to get a 980 and then sell the other 970. I guess I'll upgrade to a 980Ti if it ever exist. Just for more Vram

I am going to try to sell both and get a Titan X for the Vram. I don't think an extra .5gb is going to be enough for future games.
