Amazon dropped their prices for the 4690k to £175. I planned to upgrade to that (from 8320) but have been browsing around and have read about intel's next line up of CPU's coming out this year.

I am a gamer and don't use my computer for anything more intensive than that. I play BF4 mainly but a few other games on the side. My current graphics card is an R9 280x. Will intel's next CPU's give me any real benefit or do you think I should just get myself a 4690k? Is it worth waiting for any price drops of the 4690k when the new ones come out or is it not worth waiting for. After my next upgrade it will probably be at least 2 years until I will touch the CPU again so is it worth waiting for them? Also, I've never really paid any attention to intel CPU releases because I could never afford one so could someone give me a ball park figure of where the prices will be at and if the prices drop in the current gen CPU's, by how much?

Thankya :D

I thought it was 2016. But honestly for gaming 4690K is more than enough.

1) The 4690k is already a beastly chip, you'll be hard pressed to find a game that bogs it down or outpaces it

2) The point 1 is particularly true with your 280x

3) Don't expect intel to lower prices: check the price ranges for ivy bridge stuff they're usually just as expensive as haswell. They just wont reduce the price

4) Even if you're concerned about the future you still leave yourself the option to eventually get a 4770k or even a 4790k so is not like you're uncovered.

I say get your i5 chip now rather than later.

just make sure you get a Z97 motherboard, but that I5 is amazing.

Skylake i dont think will do well, Broadwell uses the same socket so you can always upgrade.

BF4 is actually one of the few games that the FX8 does really well on, so you might not see too, too much of an improvement if that is the only game you play.

That being said, an i5 is definitely a big improvement over the FX8 in all other games, and it might actually make BF4 more fluid by increasing minimum framerates. Intel hasn't really made big improvements from generation to generation, so waiting for Skylake won't net you much of an improvement over Devil's Canyon, especially when they are overclocked to the same speed.  Also, prices of older generations don't really drop when new ones are released.

If BF4 is pretty much all you play, and you're happy with your performance in that game, then I would say wait.  Otherwise, it is definitely worth it to upgrade to an i5-4690k + Z97 motherboard.

There has been a lot of talk about Intel Broadwell processors. For the PC side of things, the 14nm desktop Broadwell processors will be the Core i7-5775C & Core i5-5675C. These will be the first two Desktop PC processors, and as its now know they will launch mid-May.
