Ok here's the deal. I am going to build a portable LAN rig this summer. By doing so I want to upgrade my current rig's GPU and putting that GPU in my mini itx build.

I cannot decide whether to get a 980 or SLI 970s. I am going to be gaming at a 1440p resolution. I am also planning on buying the Acer 1440p G-Sync monitor over the summer as well.

I am having a tough time deciding considering that DX12 is right around the corner (although it will be a while for games to support it).

What do you guys think would be the best route to go? Or would you do something totally different?

Also here is my current build

Thanks!

i'd go with a single 980, sli 970s are great and all but i'm always an advocate of getting the single best card you can afford.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

This is true + you get 4gb vram instead of 3,5gb.

BUT, 2 gtx 970's will outperform 980 by a lot. The 980 is honestly not THAT much better than 1 970.. an overall 10-20% performance boost.

i'd say SLI.

For 1440p, SLI 970s may have trouble with the whole VRAM issue.
I'd recommend SLI 780 Ti's. They're each between a 970 and 980 performance wise, and won't cost as much as 980s.
It may be hard finding some new, but here's a link to a brand new one:

$450 Brand New. 970 Sli would cost about $700, this comes in at $900, and 980s would be around $1100.

Eh I would rather use maxwell architecture due to the many benefits of it.
