My company backs up our servers to Amazon's S3 service.

 

Normally we have the last week of backups in normal storage, then the rest in glacier class storage for the next 6 months.

 

I was setting up a new server, and double checked the bucket name and while i was at it i saw that over 500GB worth of backups in glacier class storage (basically all of it) had been deleted. I know there is a heafty fine for deleting objects pre-maturely, is there a way to reverse this?

I do not know how it happened, maybe a server saw it and thought to delete it because it was older than x days. I honestly dont care how it happened, i just need to reverse it and get the data back.

 

 

Any suggestions?

Hi Judahnator,

When your company set up with Amazon's S3 service, they probably signed or accepted some kind of agreement. Usually in these agreements you can find anything 

about the way your data is stored or moved. If there was no such agreement (which i doubt :P) you can always contact amazon support and tell them about your issue. 

There might be a chance that your data was saved redundantly and that it is still there. If not then your data is most likely gone. So basically the best thing you can do 

is check their T.O.S, contact them about it or just make sure that you have your stored safely before this can happen.

Its pretty weird... most of the times Amazon Glacier takes a lot of time for operations like delete... But I would try to speak with AWS Support, I have read they are pretty awesome and understand this kind of problems, they handle informations for enterprises like Netflix so they need to be like that xD
