I want to upgrade my 260X and what is a good AMD GPU to buy, that is under $400 US?

--Please don't make references to GeForce cards, I'm not interested in buying one.

You should be able to get a 290x for under $400. But if your willing to wait for the 300 series from AMD, I would get one of those.

Heres 2 good 290x's: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202079&cm_re=290x-_-14-202-079-_-Product

What's wrong with Nvidia?

Nvidia cards are expensive, and I want 4GB of video memory, without the 970's 3.5+.5GB issue, and the 980 with a nice cooler from a reliable brand is 500 dollars where I live.

the 290x's are pretty cheap right now, but 300 series is just around the corner, with a 260x, youre probably safe waiting a little bit, then making a decision. besides if you don't like the 300 series, the 290 will drop in price to rid of excess stock

your post helped me, I may wait for the 300 series, and I will see if they are furnaces, like the 200 series cards were, and if they are I will buy a 290X, and if they aren't I'll buy something from the 300 series.

NVIDIA cards are not expensive, you get what you pay for. The 970 is not that much more expensive than the 290X.

The GTX 3.5+0.5GB issue is not an issue. Jay has stated that the GTX 970 is still a fine card, and the only times you'll see performance affected are on select GPU heavy games with mods installed. On 1080p and 1440p it's often a very good contender.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Just scored a MSI gtx970 100me on amazon for $311. Nearly forty dollars off original price in January.

Good deal!

OP - If waiting for the 300 series isn't your cup of tea (could be many months from now), the 290x I would recommend would be the Lightning Edition from MSI.  It's a sick card and will do you very well.
