Hello!

I have a question about torrents. Or more a request for information. What exactly is a torrent? Why are they considered good/bad? I know they are downloaded from other "host" computers, and that you need a special client to open them, but that's about it. Any information would be much appreciated, and any links to other information sources are also welcomed.

Thanks

Erty

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

A torrent is the information needed to join a Peer to Peer network for downloading a file.

They are considered good because they can't be stopped by most people (basically) and are available to everyone, and they are considered bad because anyone can make them (viruses) and because they tend to be used for Piracy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torrent_file

a torrent file is a computer file that contains metadata about files and folders to be distributed, and usually also a list of the network locations of trackers, which are computers that help participants in the system find each other and form efficient distribution groups called swarms.

It's basically no different than a .txt listing the files to download and the IP addresses/hostnames of the people to download them from, among a few other things, which a Torrent Program uses to open the connections to those people/PCs.

For my pertinent links to guides, reviews, and anything similar, go here, and look under the spoiler labeled such. A brief history of Unix and it's relation to OS X by Builder.

HEMHEM!! The master has answered this question already:

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

- Cave Johnson, founder and CEO of Aperture Science, in Portal 2
