My current motherboard is dying. USB ports don't always work and installing iGPU drivers just black screens on boot with my current graphics card.

I currently use 3 of my PCI-E slots, so I'm thinking my lanes are saturated as well.

I don't perform any type of rendering, so I'm wondering if I should just make do until skylake or not.

Even if only considering the bandwidth that can be handled, the 5820K will be far better (if "3 PCIe slots" means "3 GPUs") - 28 vs 16 PCIe lanes.

I'd really only recommend an X99 platform for a gamer if you really need and will definitely use those PCIe lanes. It doesn't make a lot of sense otherwise. So it depends on what those three PCIe cards are. I don't think they can all be video cards. Keep in mind that some PCIe slots are controlled by the chipset, and so they don't take up the CPU's PCIe lanes.

Waiting for Skylake would be great if you can coast along for another several months on a dying LGA-1155 board. But if you have to get something sooner than that I don't see any reason not to recommend an i5-4690K or i7-4790K.
