i7 or i5?

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Discard the price tag, would you go the i7?

The i5 has no advantage over the i7 other than in pricing.

Should i get a i5 4690 on a Asus z97 with a GTX 980? or a i7 4790 on a Asus B85 Pro Gamer with a GTX 980?

Reason: Trying to get GTA V to run with Higher Frames and Higher Texture settings

I'd just go for the i5, Z97 board, and the GTX 980.

There isn't that much of a difference between the two: http://www.techspot.com/review/991-gta-5-pc-benchmarks/page6.html

I'd suggest getting a 4690k and oc'ing it if you need more performance.

They will perform almost the same, so get the i5, it's cheaper

Yea, if you can afford it without taking any hits elsewhere in your build, then an i7 is a good buy.

No, because it'll perform the same unless you're heavily video rendering/3D modeling.

Right now, there would be no difference between in-game performance a 4690k and 5960x, either. This won't be the case forever, though. Come 2016, in-game performance will be more determined by the performance of the cpu. Early tests shows a 100fps jump between DX 11 and DX 12 when using a 5960x Check it out...

Lol... me neither, my friend. My point was that by late 2015/early 2016 the processing power of the cpu will be reflected in in-game performance. As it stands right now, the i5 4690k performs as well in-game as the i7 4790k which is 50% more powerful. Directx 12 is supposed to allow games to take advantage of the cpu full potential. The 5960x was just the only benchmark i could find.

So if i got the i7 4790 it would be better for gaming over the i5 4690k when DirectX 12 launches

It might. Currently, the 4690k performs better than the 4790 in many games when oc'ed.
