Would a WD My Cloud EX2 be a good first NAS for something. With 2x 3tb WD reds in raid mirror? Also how is the security on WD my clouds?

This is the one i am looking at.

I would say that while the WD series are not great in that they don't offer the same level of functionality that the synology units do, they are very simple which would make them ideal for a first NAS

This is what i was thinking, as my mother has to use it too.

I meant they are firmware tweaked by WD from the factory to stop them spinning down. So they aren't any "quicker" just more expensive.

Well i was more focused on them not breaking, more than speed. I heard that the nas drives have added features, like better vibration dampening.

If you don't need Raid, you could also go for a Banana pi and one WD Red. I used this Solution a very long time.

My Setup was an 2TB Seagate HDD and an old 1TB USB Drive for backups every Week (i didn't need to backup all my mysic, so i got enough backup space).

There are to benefits by using this Setup.

1. ist extremly cheap

2. you have a dedicated Linux Server which can do a lot more things instead of a NAS.

My was hosting Owncloud, TeamSpeak, my Website, Internal DHCP Server, Radius Authentication Server, DAAP (iTunes) Stream Server, Samba (Windows Share) and some other stuff
