I am new to posting on here so don't have a go at me if I am doing something stupid! but I am building a computer for uni (I am studying computer science so I know a fair bit about this) but I want it to also be a gaming computer, So I made this list of parts: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sxrqyc do you think that's alright? I've got a budget of about $1500 but because I am from the UK it's actually a bit more than that due to conversion rates. I am either going to run 1 ultra widescreen monitor (either www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS34E790CNS/ZA or www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-34UM95) or I will run 2/3 normal monitors 23"-27" from it but I have a separate budget for them so max $1000. I was also hoping you could help me with choosing a mouse and a keyboard, one that lights up for night work would be perfect.

Firstly, so you can use £ and proper part prices, as the parts in US are not the same as here

Secondly, say no to AMD. I have it, and since I am not doing any CPU heavy work, I have no problem with it, but as you might do some at uni, get Intel

for £1000 (if I thinkg $1500 wanted to be equal to a grand) you can get this: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/ZH6QNG

It has an HDD and just 8 GB of RAM but you can upgrade it later on if required. add £80 for a 250GB SSD and  £70 for another RAM stick. 8 GB should be enough for gaming, I would not worry about that

OS: Do not care about that. At unis you are going to have some schemes where you can get a free Win 8.1, I have the same.

I am using i2369vM AOC monitors,2, they are full HD, decent enough no ghosting, although I do not have "the eye"(= I do not care about monitors as long as they are large enough)

They are £130 each

seems like a decent build to me, although, i REALLY dont prefer AMD at this price point. in less multicore-optimized situations that FX-8350 will probably slow you down pretty hard.

i dont have actual numbers to back this up, but from recent events i've had it seems that the FX-8350 has about half the single core performance of an i7 4770 (or well, any other intel part from that series)

if you're doing computer science, i can only advise you to not try and cheap out on your processor. i recently got a new build (similar to yours) with an i7 4790K for the same purpose and i can tell you i am happy i went for the extra money of the i7.

my usage usually consists of gaming (sometimes multiple games at once) and for productivity its mostly virtual machines, which like the single core performance.

tossed together this build rather quickly.

its £100 more expensive than your build, sticks to it as much as i could, and should give you quite a large boost in productivity performance. (and perhaps gaming performance)

(in case you dont like the air cooler, add £54 to the budget for the H80i)

i'll also add a reasoning for my choice of RAM: all but one of my friends have that memory, none of them had issues with their ram, aside from the one that doesnt have vengeance LP, he got tall ram with fancy heatsinks, and it hits his cooler. even if you go liquid now, you might one day go air, and have ram clearance issues.

EDIT: if you're not going to OC, get a non-K part, and save some money.
