I am looking for a cheapish 500gb external for my Mum's photos. This must be very reliable and last for a couple of years. I am looking for it to cost about 40ish quid. Thanks

Here is a Toshiba HDD and a WD HDD, the Toshiba is about 10 quid less expensive but if you somehow don't want that one you can get the WD one.

Seagate's aren't very reliable you can look the numbers up yourself and Toshiba's are just slow and cheap things.

If with the numbers you mean that backblaze article, that's not a good representation of how reliable the drives are at all. All kinds of drives are used in different racks and variable amounts.

I've been in IT for over 10 year the drives that die the most are still Seagate's and the numbers don't lie, also lookup Teksyndicate they have one episode of the Tek were they talk indepth on these failure rates.

But yeah if you wan't to save 10 bucks on a HDD that's important to you.
