Overkill but totally worth for 4k.

tbh I would go with a titan x for 4k since you need to sli that in the future, with 2x 980 you are kinda already at the limit since 3x 980 won't make sense

If you went X99 then this is a good way of doing it and saving a bumload of money. If however this is only a gaming PC, then dump X99 for Z97. Since you want 4k, I'd say wait. There aren't any top end 4k monitors with IPS and also variable refresh yet. Asus has their 4k Swift coming presumably fairly soon. You should wait until then perhaps.
