Im building a rig for my friend in a couple days around windows 8 and i was wondering if the non pro edition came with compatibility mode. he has a few games that he plays regularly (mainly the older battlefields) and we're not sure if they will be compatible with windows 8 64 bit. any ideas?

also, he is upgrading from a 5 year old laptop on windows xp. thanks in advance for any help!

Windows 8 and 8 Pro have compatibility mode. However, you don't have XP Mode like you had in Windows 7 (you can't play games on that in any case). For really old games, I would suggest to use a virtual environment like VMWare.

Please note that Windows Media Center + DVD playback codec pack, is free.... but this is the last day. It's 15$. You need Windows 8 Pro to have this pack. It's a 70$ extra if you come from Windows 8, where it will upgrade your Windows 8 to 8 Pro, and include Media Center and DVD playback codec for it.

With very few exceptions, anything that will run on Windows 7 will run on 8 just fine. Personally I've never seen a case where a 32bit program could not run on a 64bit OS. It can happen, but not really with games.

For example, I've run theme hospital on Windows 8 in DOSbox.

I've only seen custom software that is 32 bit and won't run on 64 bit OS.

The only old games that is expected to not work, are the ones that are made in 16-bit. 16-bit program support has been pulled from a 64-bit version of Windows. However, sometimes you can find an official or non official patch, where the game has been recompiled for 32-bit.

Usually, if it runs on Vista 64-bit or 7 64-bit, it will run perfectly fine on Windows 8 64-bit.
