Well with 3 more than likely your CPU wont even really support it. The PCIE ports will be 2x4 and 1x8 which slow it down a lot and so it's almost the same performance as 2. I'd go for 2 980 or Titan X

how would the gaming experience of 4k gaming be with two gtx 970's

if it is bad would 3 be better?

Not sure about pricing at the moment, but if you can afford 3, why not just get 2 GTX 980s? Fewer SLI issues. Performance doesn't scale very great from 2 to 3 GPUs, and you meet some compatibility issues. Having two 980s would give you a nice setup without the cooling, scaling, and compatibility issues of 3 970s.

At the moment duel 980s is one of the best setups for 4k imo.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

2 970 for 4k is fine it can handle 4k without much problem. Don't go for 3 970 though at that point 2 980 is better.

Depends on the game, I have two 970s SSC from EVGA and play Diablo 3 at 4K DSR without issues :) but then again, D3 is not a demanding game :P

I have SLI as well, BFH 5760x1080 no problem, which is almost the same amount of pixels as 4k right? Close?

Could be, but like I said, depends on the game :)

True. I think it would be fine imo. It's hell of a card. Can't 1 play 4K? Like medium settings on most games? I think linus did a video but I don't remember.

3 will get your almost no more performance than 2. Get a second one, it's great, and you can brag C:

I didn't. Got one day of release, had 2 left because the person in front of me bought 5. Yes... 5... But my dad wouldn't let me get a second one because he said there was no need. So I just drove myself back a month later with the cash and got it :)

Nice, still a good purchase, I don't regret it one bit, the 970 is still a great money/performance card... the two together are just a bit more expensive than a single 980 but can deliver up to 70-80% more performance over a single 980 :)
