You can only guess from SMART testing and total up-time from what I know.

Use the utility provided by the hard drive's manufacturer, that's about it.  HDTune can give you some info too.

The easiest way of testing the condition of your hard drive is to get a diagnostic utility from the manufacturer and run scans for the S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors. You can look around on the internet for detailed explanation of what each entry of the S.M.A.R.T. status stands for.
