So im Starting School soon for a mechanical engineer so I will be using alot of Solidworks, Autocad and Catia

but I want to have a GPU that can also play most games

Also it has to be a laptop as it will be used in class and in dorm

my though was the msi gt80 with SLI gtx980's or 970's and if needed i could change them out If i notice a better GPU would be better for what im doing

My Price range is around 2000-3000$ CAN

Thanks ahead of time for any recommendations

For that money you could buy a cheap note taking laptop and a really high end gaming desktop!

I'm biased--I bout an old iPad to use for note taking (for like $50 used from a friend) and put all my money into a desktop. I use autocad and to be honest, it's not very intensive.

Maybe consider buying a dedicated work desktop and a dedicated note-taking laptop? Then you can have some future upgradability? Just an idea. I don't have a laptop to recommend. Personally, I dislike laptops :/

I think the best choice would probably be MSI GT80, especially since they promised future upgrade component (as far as I can remember)

Electrical Engineer here, I would rather suggest you to build a gaming/engineering PC within $2000.00 and use the rest to buy a decent Lenovo laptop. (T440s or similar)

To contentiously work iSolidworks, Autocad, Catia, MATLAB, PacketTracer, or any engineering related will be a absolute pain to work in a 15 inch form factor.

A gaming laptop will be very bulky and heavy to move around in campus.

I tried the gaming laptop thingy my self, didn't work.

I have a Lenovo y410p Right now and I like it but would rather Upgrade 1 rather than keep this laptop and build a new Desktop

... if that the case I suggest you build a desktop as well... and upload your work to GG drive or create your Home network to share the work between your PC and Laptop~

Keep the Lenovo y410p, build a PC with 2 or monitors. All the monitors don't need be 27" ips or anything. Get a good monitor as the main one and pick up the other two more from craigslist or some place (those will be very cheap). I found it absolutely amazing boosting my productivity in my college years.
