I currently do video work, as a hobby (YouTube and family videos) as well as semi professionally. I work with a wedding photographer and I make wedding videos when his clients want one since she wishes to be focused on the pictures. So I do a good amount of editing during the warmer months. I currently record in 1080p and edit in it as well. I am looking to make the jump to 4k, so with the RED Weapon (8k sensor) anounced I am thinking I will be able to pic up at least one used Scarlet with the 5k sensor or 6k sensor, I am hoping toget two in money permits in the fall when the RED Weapon is to be released.

Currently I have an i7 3770 non k and a 660 ti, I am pretty damm sure this set up won't allow me to edit 4k red raw files very well. What do you think is a good upgrade that will allow me to edit in 4k raw? For budget I don't have one exactly since I will be saving for it if I can't afford it now (have about 1800 cad). I think a reasonable max would be 3000-4000 but would like to go less if possible maybe 2000?

I should add that at first I may only have 1 4k camera so final will be 1080p but within 6 months of getting the first I am planning to have 2 more as multicam is an important part of the work.

No I am just looking for the CPU, MOBO, GPU already have everything else.

would you mind going x99, or E5 Xeon, if i can fit it in the budget?

Nope, kind of figured I would have to but was not sure which processor I would need.

alright.

Actually could not do an E5 rig that would beat this, while being in a similar price bracket. You could also replace the 5820K with a 5960X or an E5v3 Xeon, if your budget allows it :)

6 cores is able to handle 4k raw? Wow would not have expected that but hey I'll take it much cheaper.

well its not going to be real time of course :P but yes, you should be fine. If you shit out some money, more cores/ram is always an option. or if you do CUDA rendering, another GPU

What do you think would allow editing in real time at full res, render does not matter since I send that to a second pc to just render from which is currently an i5 3570k at 4.2. I am planning on putting in a Quadro card on the low end just for 10 bit support since the scarlet records in higher than that and because Ge force is better price/performance.

oh you dont render? then your PC is already good enough. just add more ram. As for real time rendering, dont even bother.

I do render but on a separate PC that can render for up to 3 days max, I do want to edit in full 4k though not using 1/4 res in Premiere. That is why I am thinking I need a better CPU and as for RAM I have 24 GB since one 8gb stick got broke.

Any idea of where I could download some 4k red raw?

no. cant you just upscale some 1080p raw?

Just throwing an idea out there, dual xeon 1231v3's and gtx 980

That would come to the came as getting a 5960X so rather not since not all software support multi cpu, If I was going to go multi this is it.

With a 980

E3-xxxx (in your case 1231) do not support multiCPU setups, since they only have one QPI link.

This is actually a very potent setup, if you have the money. but thats more of a rendering station than just an editor

If it turns out it can render a whole 30+ min thing in 8 hours or so then sure rendering with it makes it even better, I also see it as not much more expensive than the 5820k system. Because of only 200 extra for MOBO and an extra cpu so $800 extra for much better performance, seems like it might be worth it. Will need to look at scaling for CPUs in premiere pro cc 2014 and resolve full version.

well it wont last nearly as long as on the 3560k that i can tell you :) Apart from any windows problems, the scaling should be comparable to 1cpu with 12 cores.

Quicker render time will be nice, currently for 1080 pro res input and h.264 master it takes about 7 min per 1 min of footage, average videos given are 3-5 min and 30-45 min so near 4 hours to 6 hours total render time. So in theroy 4x that is way too long in the i5, so maybe building a render/ editing rig is the way to go

You do realize that the RED weapon body starts at 35 000$ US and that the 8k sensor version costs 10 grand more.

Yeah? I never said I was looking at that one, I was saying when others buy it they sell off their old cameras and i am planning on buying one of them (used ones). Never once did I imply or say I was going to buy red weapon. Wish I could but can't like most people.
