Hey everyone, I currently have a pretty okay system for video and I want to get into content creation on YouTube. (Mainly gaming videos) I also use this system for livestreaming on TwitchTV, and it does a great job. However I want to know what upgrade I should go for in my PC to make it a bit beefier when it comes to video editing and things like that. Usually whenever I have a recording session I will record for about two hours at a time. I use XSplit for recording my facecam in 720p, and an Elgato Game Capture HD 60 for recording my games. I basically want my recording sessions to go as smooth as possible, and my editing to go as smooth as possible. I'm just a bit stumped on what I should actually upgrade in my PC. (Here are the important specs by the way.)

Intel Core i7-4790k (On a Stock Cooler)

8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz Memory. (2 sticks of 4)

ASUS Z97-A Motherboard

AMD R9 270 2GB Graphics Card

Some 6 year old Western Digital 750GB Hard Drive.

Windows 8.1 64 Bit

I have about 120 dollars to spend on an upgrade right away, and I'd like to know what Linus Tech Tips has to say for this sort of thing. I'm not INSANELY tech savy, and I don't know which approach would be give me the best performance increase for my money. Should I get an SSD? Should I get more RAM? Or should I do something else? Let me know. I'd highly appreciate any feedback. (By the way in case you were wondering only about 150GB of the 750GB Hard drive is actually occupied.)

There are some things you could upgrade, if 120 dollars will be sufficient, probably not.

First, i would get an ssd (240GB+), install windows on it and all the capture software stuff, and use it as a temporary place to save the videos you are editing and capturing.
This will get you a huge speedboost in loading, editing and saving video's.

Second, A new hdd or a backup hdd would be nice. Because your hdd is already 6 years old. And if it fails you have no backup's of it and you will lose all your hard work.

Third, I would upgrade my graphics card to a R9 290 or better or a GTX 970 or better.

Fourth, Maybe an extra 8GB of ram, this will help in the speed you can render video's.

Fifth, a better cooler, if you can and are willing to overclock for an overall speed increase on your cpu. If you don't want to overclock, just ignore this. (it would be a shame for that 4790k, it is screaming for an overclock, oh please, oh please overclock me)

These upgrades will give you an absolute beast of a system. And if this isn't enough, you will have to upgrade to an 2011 socket platform.

The system you have there is just fine IMO, it would be very happy if i had something like that for editing and so forth. But you know, you can always go that little bit further and keep throwing cash at it.

EDIT: this is just my personal opinion, opinions may very on this ;)

Thanks so much for the tips. I'll keep them in mind and do more research on some SSD's.

If you're not using up all of your available RAM already and want an easy improvement in render times and the ability to render in real-time, grab yourself either of the two best value air coolers on the market at the moment:

http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-RR-212E-20PK-R2/dp/B005O65JXI [Hyper 212 EVO]

http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Contact-Heatpipes-RR-T4-18PK-R1/dp/B00BSKY1M4 [Hyper T4]

These should both allow your 4790K to run at its 4.4Ghz turbo boost with fairly low temperatures, while leaving you enough money to get some extra RAM for more useful working space.
