I've been meaning to upgrade my PC for a couple of months now and I need some recommendations and or input!

CPU: AMD FX-4350 Quad 4.2
GPU: MSI R9 280x 3GB
MOBO: AsRock 970 Pro3 R2.0
8gb RAM HyperX Red Series 1600
PSU: Corsair CX750
Windows 8.1 OEM (edit: full version)

I am thinking of upgrading to the AMD FX-8350 and I feel like I would need a on par mobo to go along with it. I also just purchased the h100i to kick of the upgrade.

Also a little side question, if I were to upgrade my mobo, could I just swap the mobo or would I have to completely purchase a new copy of windows 8.1?

Any recommendations or input on what I should and shouldn't be doing?

Thank you!

If you switched the mobo while you had Windows already installed, a fresh install is needed.  I don't know about your budget, but I'd personally go with an i5 instead of AMD,

Go intel. i5 4590 would be good if you dont overclock. You will need to rebuy windows, and then get a new motherboard, any h97 mobo will do. h100i isnt necessary, your components will run cool enough with an air heatsink such as the 212 EVo which works great.

And please dont type with a black background

If he isn't overclocking he could go with the Xeon 1231 V3?

Get a 4690K, Z97 mobo, you'll need to rebuy windows. You may also want to include the specific details of your ram. Is it 1600?

As much as it is a minor uprade, maybe a 290 would be nice in there too, although it might not be worth it for $400 (AUD)

Personally I'd go Intel if you're upgrading, especially if you're replacing the motherboard. The AMD chips are so old at this point.

You don't have to rebuy Windows. A lot of the time you can reinstall it just fine. If not a simple call to Microsoft will often work.

Also Z97 motherboards are often cheaper, if not so similar in cost that getting them over an H87 motherboard makes more sense. Depends what his needs are.

It's an LGA1150 CPU according to http://ark.intel.com/products/80910/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1231-v3-8M-Cache-3_40-GHz

Also check your Windows License. I've changed motherboard without buying a new copy of Win7 Ultimate. They should have a number of Re-Arms. If they haven't ran out, Microsoft should be able to transfer the license to the new PC (Locks to Mobo AFAIK).

Run the command

slmgr.vbs /dlv

in CMD to check the licensing status.
