Hi guys

not sure if this is the right section, also my knowledge of networking is terrible

I'm using a D-link DNS 320 with two 2tb western digital reds, and transferring items as always been really slow 7-8 MB/s, my current network is my router downstairs, a switch in the room with the pc, and into that switch I have the NAS and the computer, I don't think it's a networking problem as I can download via the internet 8-10 mb/s (fiber internet)

Just wondering if this is a normal transfer speed, if not what can I do to improve it?

thanks in advance!  :)

make sure everything on the network is gigbit

and make sure all your ethernet is cat6

all gigbit and cat6 cabling

You should be able to get ~50-100MB/s (depending on the hard drives and whether they are RAID or not) if your switch and router are gigabit.  If your switch or router are not gigabit you will be limited to 12.5MB/s.

all gigbit and cat6 cabling

if thats actually true..which I kinda doubt

switch is gigbit, and I put the cabling in myself. router is also gigbit (BT homehub 3)

Edit: tried swapping the router last week (had a spare) no change

Well that's the theoretical max.  It's hard to tell what could be wrong without being there in person

Copying across some files now, getting a consent 7.86mb/s if that helps?

Most people who have 100mb/s (non-Gigabit) routers say they usually get around 6-9 MB/s, and it can change depending on file size (large files transfer reeeeeeeealllllllyyyyyyy slow).

Normal speeds are 25-30MB/s writes for that NAS, so I'm guessing your router isn't gigabit.

should be, my switch is pulled into a port called "GigE" unless that's some rubbish BT slap on the thing...

anyway thanks for you time mate :)

Try one of these.  Plug your modem into the switch then plug in the NAS and computer and test speeds.  If you get the same results, plug the computer and NAS into the router (so no switch) and test.  No problem :^)

What are you transferring off and to? Are either of these RAIDs? Is anything going over wireless?

Nothing over wireless, not in RAID, from my pc to my nas
