Parts:

Raidmax Vampire 850 watt Gold PSU

AMD FX-6300

2x Gigabyte r9 270x (x-fire)

8 gb G.SKILL Sniper RAM

MSI 970A-G43 mobo

ok so here we go.

I just installed the Cooler Master hyper 212 evo to replace the crappy stock cooler that came with my cpu. I had to completely remove my motherboard (which requires me to remove everything from it, save the RAM and CPU). I successfully installed the cooler and proceeded to put the whole damn computer back together. Boot up aaaaaand there's no display and the two GPUs have no signs of activity...no fans turning, monitor says no signal, nothing. Well shit. This happened once before about a month ago and I realized I just forgot to plug a PCI connector in all the way. So I check all my connectors (they're fine). (By the way, all of the other fans and components in the case work fine too, i.e. I can hear the HDD spinning, all fans work well). I remove one gpu and test each one individually in both PCI-e slots with the same results...no display, no activity. Well they worked fine an hour before, what could have changed? I didn't short out the boards because I used an ESD strap and was on a wooden floor. I'm lost, pissed off, and my fingers are raw from removing and replacing so many connectors over and over again lol

good luck

Ok so I took the whole thing apart again and set up a ghetto test bench with only my cpu and gpu(s) plugged in and lo' and behold it worked! I put it all back together again....doesn't work. This is making me think that another component is interfering with the power. I have two 12v rails and my PSU is actually 800watt not 850 but still about 150 watts more than I actually need so I'm pretty sure it's not a PSU problem, although I could be wrong. Interesting thing I should note however- whenever I flick the switch to cut off the power supply, the fans on my GPUs twitch slightly which lets me know they are getting power. Any suggestions?

Things to try.

Make sure the cable is properly installed.

Install the latest motherboard BIOS then boot.

Try the GPU in another system if you can.

report back.

when you say only the cpu and gpu(s) you did use a motherboard and ram and hdd and cpu cooler on your test bench right?

Weather a PSU has or has not the needed supply of power is one thing you need to consider but you also have to consider the amps that is supplied by the 12v rail/s and if that meets the hardware's requirements. Apart from that, If specific hardware works when using just bare components and then it doesn't with all components installed, it can be tricky to diagnose this problem.

Things this could be.......

  1. faulty PSU(try a new PSU if you can)
  2. faulty PSU connector(check each PSU connector and make sure the wires are not loose or broken)
  3. PSU does not create/provide needed amps for specific components(check your manual or the support website to see if you can find the supplied amperage on the 12v rail.
  4. something is grounding the system, either the standoffs or some connector(make sure you have use the correct standoffs, that no bare wires are overlapping eachother of touching motherboard pins)
  5. faulty component ( you would need to test all components to find out which one(s) that is causing the problem)
  6. RAM compatibility( try your ram at 1333mhz
  7. Not to burst your bubble or anything....most Raidmax PSUs have a really wonky reliability in my experience.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
