Info:

So I have fx 6300 with cooler master 212 evo and my motherboard is asrock 970 extreme 4 (rest of build is in my spoiler/signature).

I want to overclock my processor to at least 4 ghz but I have heard that my motherboard has bad vrm or something so I shouldn't even try overclocking.

When I do try it and have turned of Cool'n quiet and thermal throttle my psu still throttles in prime 95 around 60-64 degrees.

(I use celsius to measure degrees).

Questions:

Is it worth overclocking this and if so how?

I don't think I can overclock my processor if I can't even reach 65 degrees but what do you guys think?

if your worried about O.C then don't do it. if your confident that all the parts can "handle" it e.g. psu is a good quality one, mobo is O.C friendly, cpu is overclock able and the heatsink can handle the higher temps then go for it

I am not especially worried, my cooling should be enough and my parts should be able to handle that small amount of overclock.

I just want to know by those more experienced if I should even try to and (possibly) how to correct/fix my problems.

most cpu's can be O.C 500MHz on all cores so try that

Any idea what to do about my throttling/underclocking?

Is it fine for prime95 aka is this supposed to happen on amd cpus?

if its throttling don't overclock

So you don't know why It happens?

I don't think it's supposed to do this ..

I will try to play some LoL with it and see how it is in game.

Throttling with an FX is usually from one of two causes: heat or voltage. If your cooler isn't up to the task or not mounted right it'll be heat. If your motherboard vrm setup or power supply aren't suited to your chips needs then its voltage.

Sometimes its a combination. With a 970 board I would immediately assume it was a voltage issue since 970 series boards have a monumental VRM weakness.

1. So I need to have low voltage?

2. How low?

3. Like 1.3 to 1.35 ?

No, its insufficient voltage supplied through the board under stress. When your VRMs on the motherboard are under load they are buckling under the demand from your CPU, therefor your CPU is not getting enough of its daily vitamin V. Thats why its throttling down til the VRMs stabilise.

A good 6+2 and higher power phase board will solve your issue. Or your PSU is failing. Monitor your line voltages using HWmonitor or HWinfo and see if they spike. Some boards allow vrm load monitoring as well which is very handy.

I am not sure what your mean..

But I am 95% sure that my psu is not failing since I have had my computer for like 2-3 months aka not long.

Can I not overclock with my motherboard?

Or what are you saying?

Your motherboard has weak voltage regulators. When you stress your CPU, this taxes your motherboard. You cannot overclock a motherboard. And with your motherboard you won't be able to overclock your CPU.

Your motherboard has crap power delivery. Get a 990FX board with 6+2 or even 8+2 power phase setup. That will fix your throttling issue and you will also be able to overclock your CPU.

I won't be able to buy new computer components for at least 1-2 years and I am not good at building.

Can I overclock with default voltage then?

I am not completely sure if the right default settings are saved but I do have a profile that says default.

"You cannot overclock a motherboard."

I know that :P
