Hey! How ya all doin"?,

Just got a bit of a problem deciding of which path I want to take. Taking price out of the situation. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should replace my 6 year old PC with a high-end iMac 2012 model or a Windows PC.

I own a Macbook Air (2012 model) and I do like OS X, however I do use Sony Vegas Pro a lot and do use it quite extensively. This may seem like an obvious choice to go with the Windows System but I do like the idea of an all-in-one computer. I have actually looked at Windows-based AIOs but to get decent specs on them you'd pay almost AU$3,000. However the high-end iMac does offer decent specs for the price compared to Windows AIO.

I'm not just focused on AIO computers though, as I am looking at getting a PC built for me with the components listed in my sig. I do realise to get the most value the Windows system would be the best option yet I can't get passed how good the iMac looks and the fact that I actually don't mind OS X at all, in fact I consider, in terms of which OS I prefer, them to be equal because I like both operating systems equally as much.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

By an iMac and install Windows on on it. It's like Burger King; you can have it your way. With bootcamp you can use both operating systems on the same computer

I do realise that and that's what's making it hard because I know I could still use Sony Vegas on an iMac.

I love Vegas, and I don't have any experience with it but final; cut may be a fantastic plain mac solution without bootcamp. It has the same ease of use as Vegas. Just way more expensive... But as a rule and I am biased, I never recommend buying a mac. i find that all their stupid little "We're apple, you use it how we tell you to use it" thing provides way too many drawbacks than positives

I am good at computer

My personal preferance would be to build a dual boot hackingtosh, like the the one I have at my side. But if it is a AIO computer your after I would say the the iMac is your best choice.

Well I'm not completely after an AIO computer as I do realise that in my situation most people would say go for the custom PC option.

How hard is it to build a hackintosh? Are there any hackintosh specific components that I need to be aware of?

It's not hard to build a hackingtosh, as long as you follow a guide: http://lifehacker.com/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-building-a-hackintosh-o-5841604. This is only one of the guides on the internet, but it was the one I used. The only differance is that I use a EVGA GTX 680 Mac edition graphicscard insted of the GT 640

To be honest, I have tried FCP X but with Vegas Pro all your text and graphical overlays are handled as video files so you can apply transitions and effects to say only a logo or text without it, the effect, applying itself to the whole video which I realise FCP doesn't do and can't do.

As you may be able to tell I love Sony Vegas.

I love veags as well, but it cuts rendering when I have complex effects in my video, it freezes which is really annoying. For hackintosh building, I've heard it said that gigabyte boards are built for them... So yeah, go gigabyte no matter what you do

I tried to fix that when I read it by saying it freezes. It pauses when it gets to the effect, freezes then finally causes Vegas to stop responding and I have to kill the process

Go with a PC and build it so that you can dual boot OS X if you want. Stay away from bootcamp and dual boot on mac! I find that the Windows side experiences lower performance and has weird issues.

Here is a wiki on hackintosh that is excellent http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Oh! Sorry didn't see that. I did notice in your sig that your 3570K i5 CPU is OC to 5.1GHz. Could it be that you have your cpu already working overtime at 5.1GHz (because even if you use your GPU to render out your Vegas Pro projects it would still use your CPU somewhat) and then when you go to render out your project it pushes the CPU too far causing Vegas Pro to freeze?

Um, this was back when my CPU was at stock frequency, I haven't tried to render that particular video again at 5.1

Oh, and 3770k not 3570k

So, maybe I'm I got this wrong, are you suggesting I take the iMac route and learn FCP X?

Hmm...thinking about my options, I think the custom PC is the best way to go for me. For good raw performance it seems the most logical.

Edit: hmm don't there's any clear winner. You think you don't want an iMac until you see one.

Just googled the 2012 iMac again.
