The 280(x) will help because of the extra GB of VRAM compared to the 960. But if you can scrap up the money go for the 970.

Ok I have been presented with the choice of graphics card

My choice is the 960 or 280, however I could possibly get a 970 if I sacrificed horsepower elseware.

 

Suggestions

Between 960 and 280 go with the 280. Horsepower? Get the 970 over the other two if you can afford it.

Go with a 970, but the r9-280 is very good if you can't get it.

Don't buy a GTX 980, it's overpriced! Buy 2 GTX 970s or 2 R9 290s intstead (the R9 290s would even be cheaper)
