So i have been trying to create a partslist for a good pc with a 144Hz display. the current parts list is here: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Colt_0pz/saved/92nKHx the problem is that i can't seem to get one good awnser. i made a post on pcmasterrace builds and also wanted to post here to get as much help as i can. Also, are r9 290's closer to the 960 or the 970 in gaming performance? all help is appreciated

290's are much closer to the 970 than the 960

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

You can trust me, I'm from the Internet.

So is your main question how good your build is, or what display to get?

And an r9 290 would be closer to a 970

you can always go on gpuboss.com to match up benchmarks (I do it just for funsies)

GPUBOSS.com is very very inaccurate. they don't update their bench marks with driver revisions. and they don't screen results validity.

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2014-vga-charts/benchmarks,175.htmlwill give you a better idea.

i want to be sure if i am not doing something stupid. like trying to run 4k on a potato for example. the most graphically intensive game i will run is GTA V for now. Thx for the guys that told me the 290 was closer to the 970. also, gpuboss was inaccurate as it showed the 960 and 290 neck to neck probably with refrence coolers

Alright, hadnt run into too much trouble with gpuboss yet, will keep that in mind when recommending it to people.

if you are running 290 in sli you will either have to upgrade to an i7 or run them in 8x because an i5 doesnt have enough pci-e lanes (honestly shouldnt make much difference)

you could run an i5-4690 or 4690k for like 40 bucks more, and I think the cooler master EVO has better cooling for like 6 dollars more

Also those video cards are overkill for 1080p, although I guess if you want to use them in 144hz monitor you want really, really high fps..all the time..for some reason..

well the thing is, this build was gonna be far, far more different. here's the original parts list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Colt_0pz/saved/#view=pM6xFT

1 all 1150 cpu's only have 16x PCIe 3.0 lanes so you would need to go x99 i7  to get native x16 on both cards

2 like you mentioned it is totally not worth it.

the 4690/K does not do anything to help. i am fine with 8x as long as it does not bottleneck the performance.

Sorry, Nvidia on the brain :P

that looks much more reasonable for 1080p gaming

if you are using your crossfire setup, then 1440p or 4k would make more sense

the main difference is the refresh rate. ofc a build like this is great for 4k 60hz and 1440p 144hz but the issue is that 1440p 144hz is too expensive and 1080 is the only option. besides can't i disconnect power from one of the gpu's when i don't need it? EDIT: ofc i need to restart everytime i decide to take out or disconnect power from the card and i have an auxillary monitor i use to monitor gpu and cpu temps and change fan speed manually

...my point isnt power consumption being an issue, its why are you buying 2 graphics cards when 1 would do the same job just fine?

idk, maybe i am a graphics hog? EDIT: one guy posted a parts list that would double the performance so the 290's stuck. and still, it can give me an advantage if i decide to use this for video editing. there are many possibilities with computers

lol if you have the budget for it, why not I guess. There are just a lot of logical gaps in your build, but I will tackle the big 3: 2 gpus in 1080p is overkill, you should just buy a crappy 1080p monitor now and get a 4k one when you can, your cpu is underpowered and will be the bottleneck of your system, and 2 gpus in 1080p is overkill (I had to say it twice)

crappy? i am gonna use a 144hz one and it's by asus xD and i would prefer the ROG swift vs 4k if i had the choice.EDIT: i can still have a leftover card to use for a cheap build or to give it away to someone for a lower cost. it's just that good of a gpu
