Hello LTT community, I plan on making some big changes in my computer in the near future, but Id still like to be able to afford my tuition afterwards. I plan to retire my 8350 which has served me very well, and switch to Intel. Im aware of the differences between the 4770k and 4790k, but if i were able to find a 4770k at an extremely low "clearance" price, would it be worth it? The heat isnt an issue as my system is watercooled, my only aim is performance and longevity, id like to wait a few generations before upgrading again.

Edit: would a 4820k and x79 board perform better than the 4790k?

The 4770k and 4790k are performance wise the same. You might get a higher overclock on the 4790k, but that also depends on the good old silicon lottery.

So, if you can find a 4770k at a lower price, then go for it. Your system won't explode :P

Get the 4770K for the cheap price if you can. Microcenter has a great deal on the 4790K if you have one in your area.

Yeah I know but they do price match Newegg and Amazon. I'm not sure about Amazon. But they do price match TigerDirect as well.
