I am essentially at the point where I have enough cash saved up so I can move from AMD to Intel. The question is, do I move to Z97 or X99. I am located in the UK and my budget for the move is around £600, (I use my PC for gaming, audio editing, video editing and general day to day activities) with this I am either looking at moving to an i7 4790k, with a top end motherboard such as this, reusing my old RAM, or going for an i7 5820k alongside this deal.

If anyone has any comments regarding either decision please let me know :)

The question is, do you need 6c/12t? If you're gaming only an i5 4690K will suit you as good as a 4790 or even a 5820K.

What sort of audio/video editing are you doing? Are you doing it professionally, and in a situation where you can put a price on every extra second shaved off?

For amateur productivity stuff, the i7-4790K + Z97 is going to be plenty. At the risk of this forum jumping down my throat, a Core i5-4690K is probably plenty in that case.

I am a university student doing these kind of projects for my coursework, I do also do some freelance work at the moment, while it could be argued that the i7's are not "needed" I just feel while I have the money it would be a sensible investment to spend the extra £100 on a cpu that does provide the benefits of hyper-threading.

The 4690K will be OK, but the 4790K will be a bit faster.

Well, I think a 4790K is a reasonable choice for this. But I don't believe you need to make the step up to X99, unless maybe you needed the extra PCIe lanes.

Thanks for the input. I have heard some horror stories about the MSI board, so I guess putting the money into a more stable Z97 would make more sense

Doesn't seem like a bad deal on that X99 combo, could potentially sell your old ram too.

But i guess if you have been reading bad things about it, then you could take that into consideration.

I think the i7-5820k would be the way to go if the computer is more of for working and rendering videos, you should see some phenomenal rendering times.

You will be able to upgrade to 32GB later with that combo, just have to buy more identical ram. The x99 will have the slots readily available too.

Not saying you couldn't get 32gb out of a z97 board, but I was basing what I said off of the combo that you would have already purchased.

Going with a 4790k minimum would be my recommendation, as like you said, they Hyperthreading is totally worth the 100.
