Get a 970. That stacked vRam won't work in the way you think it will. One set will hold textures, etc... the other will hold other data. You don't magically get 4/8gb useable. With a 970, you can always add a second later, where you can't with a 960 SLI (2-way only). The 970 is massively more powerful as well.

Edit: As far as the memory bus goes, that's not true. You'll be limited to 128 bit, even with DX12. That's the cards physical capability to connect to the motherboard, and a new API won't change that.

So I currently have a GTX 960. I was talking to my friend about either buying a GTX 970 (or if they bring out something better at that price point), or buy another 960 to put it in SLI, considering that DX12 is going to support stackable RAM, which would make 4GB. He said that even though the 960's have a 128-bit bus, both of them will combine because of DX12 so I shouldn't get a 970.

Is he speaking truth or?

Also - no, AMD people, I'm not buying a bloody 290. Or 290X. Or any of the 3XX.

a 290 is another option

however I think it might be better for you to wait for the amd 3x series in a few months

Did you read his question?
