Hello good folks of LTT!

So I was watching some youtube videos until I get this error message, my desktop went black and all the files on my desktop are gone. I scanned my system with Avast antivirus free version and also with malwarebytes, Malwarebytes found some viruses and I deleted them, restarted my system and the files are still gone.

When I check my other folder suddenly there's a lot of files on that folder, I don't know if I have to delete those or not.

So I restore my system to 2 days before this happened but my desktop is still black and the files is not there either. Can someone please help me out to fix this problem and to get my files back.

Thank you in advance

Malware may have removed the files. You might be able to get them back if you use a program that can restore files. In addition, some malware may be hiding in RAM. Start your system in Safe Mode and then scan it again.

Run a scan of superantispyware

then refer to this thread and run these scans to but be warned some of the programs on the thread are for extremely infected computers, so they will remove files without permission, read the thread carefully before running any scans, and only run one scan at a time.

Try using a data recovery program such a Piriform's Recuva

Try scanning in safe mode, If your system is still playing up and Malwarebytes can't find anything (Rememeber to tick to option to scan for rootkits, it's disabled by default), I would reinstall Windows

Even if AV says Malware is cleaned and everything looks fine, you have no idea what modification/changes the malware has done to your system.

What I would do:

  1. Dump all important documents into pen drive.
  2. Wipe all PC drives.
  3. Fresh install Windows.
  4. Create a BitDefender Rescue Disk
  5. Boot into the rescue disk, and scan recovered documents with Virus Scanner. The rescue disk uses a live Linux distro, so any Windows malware will very likely be inactive.
  6. Boot normally back into Windows and rehouse your backed up documents from the pen drive.

This may should paranoid, but this should give your absolute certainty that no traces of malware remain.
