Go to solution Solved by Dannykins,

I'm using a dvi to vga adapter, and outputting using vga so I'm not sure how much lower resolution you can go. But yes, I have tried playing around with the resolution settings, however that's really hard to do with nothing displaying.

i am going to assume that this cable you're using works correctly and you have tested it since you have have a dvi to vga adapter.

i would try it without the adapter just use the vga cable see if it is the adapter that is not compatible or something.

also if you get no signal from the vga, try to turn the computer off with the cable connected then turn it back on, sounds stupid but if a card is working it should detect automatically on startup.

if none of these work then i would suggest plugging the vga into the motherboard instead, and checking your bios to make sure your video card slot is not disabled.

and finally if all that fails then take the card out and reseat it back into its correct position ensuring it is connected correctly.

if none of that works then the card is dead

Hi everyone,

So, I have an old computer laying around that I want to use as a media center PC. It was stored in my guest house over the winter, where we don't keep the heat on. Probably got a little below freezing in there. I started the computer up the other day, and everything turns on and runs and it beeps to say it's going to the login screen, but nothing displays. The display won't even recognize there is anything plugged in. I have tried it on other monitors as well and same thing happens. Did the cold kill it? Any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

It's an older MSI card, definately not in production anymore. Has 2 dvi ports as displays. Not sure the exact model and things.

Have you tried to remove the video card and reseat it?

Will removing the video card hurt the system at all?

Well no it will not hurt the system if you remove it correctly and carefully, but as of now the system is hurt already or at least the card is.

so removing the card is fine just do not damage the motherboard or anything else in the process, once removed check it for any damage and clean any dust or dirt, then reseat it and try again.

I reseated it and it worked. However now there is a windows problem. I am booting into safe mode (hopefully) and the resolution is pretty terrible(1074x740) but at least something displays. guess we are gettting somewhere. If anyone wants to help with the window's problem that would be awesome. It says that I should insert the recovery disk, which of course the computer is so old, i dont have it. May just get a copy of windows from my college and start again.

Is there anyway to totally clean the old hard drive before the fresh install(still can't get into the computer) or do I just insert the USB and it will wipe everything before a new install.

Cool. It appears as though that is the next step. Kind of needed to get rid of vista anyway.

Glad to see that reseating it actually got you a signal.
