Would an i5 4460 handle decent upper tier cards, from either camp, in SLI or Xfire? Debating getting a different motherboard and doing such things. Want to get a 144Hz monitor within a few months.

 

If you're talking about having two GTX 970s for example, that's powerful enough at 1080p to shift the bottleneck almost exclusively onto the CPU. An i5-4460 is a pretty good match for the stock i5-2500k they use in the tests below:

You likely won't get as many FPS as with an overclocked i5 or a locked or overclocked i7. There isn't much difference between a locked i5 and unlocked i5 or i7 when you're playing with vsync to 60 FPS, but that difference starts to show when you're targeting 120 Hz or 144 Hz. But it's not like you're going to be stuck at the level of a single card since a locked i5 can still hit 100+ FPS in a lot of games when paired with killer multi GPU setups.
