Hey guys

So I recently purchased a Sceptere X20G-Naga III from Goodwill. I tried it out using VGA when I was there on a store computer and everything appeared to be in order, so I bought it and took it home. Now, unfortunately, when I got home, when I tried plugging it into my laptop's hdmi port and the monitor's dvi port over this converter cable, I couldn't get anything to detect, let alone display anything. I know the display works, since I can still get it to work over VGA on different computers, but unfortunately my laptop only has an HDMI port and I know that converting digital to analog is a real pain, is expensive relatively, and isn't bulletproof by a long shot. Also, I know for a fact that the converter cable works as well, since I can get other dvi monitors to work using it with my laptop.

The one thing that still gives me hope that I can get the display to work over dvi is the fact that when I have the Sceptere plugged into my laptop, and when I have display settings opened in windows, if I wiggle the power cable for the display till the point where sparking can be heard, the display flashes grey and is detected by windows in display settings (shows the monitor name, resolution, stuff like that) for a brief moment, and then it loses connection with it.

So anyone have any idea what may be going on here and what I may be able to do to get the display working properly?

Thanks.

I tried getting a VGA monitor to work with my PS3 through adapters. Like you said, I don't think it's possible without spending a tonne of money. IDK really though sorry :P

Half the cables you find on amazon are super cheap and won't work because they're supposed to be passive adapters and you need active or semiactive converters to be able to convert digital to analog. The other half of the adapters have both really positive reviews and really negative reviews so they're only somewhat sketchy at best.
