Hi All,

Just got most of my new rig together but im hitting a wall trying to get a old HDD on the new machine working. Basically I used to run Win XP (SP3) 32 bit. Now im on Win 7 64 bit. The old HDD is an IDE but my new mobo doesnt have an IDE connector. No problem i though so i bought a Startech bi directional IDE to Sata connector and hooked it up.

The LEDs on it show active power and HDD activity but when i look in my computer theres nothing there. Fine i thought ill check disk management. Only things there were my DVDRW and SSD. checked in the bios and it doesnt show there either.

The only thing I can think of is when I was installing Win 7 on the SSD (which had previously had XP on it) i couldnt because it said something about using GPT and AHCI (or AHPI i cant remeber) instead of MBR. So i used an iso from somewhere to format the SSD with the GPT. then everything worked fine on the SSD and I couldnt install Win 7 as long as i set the Sata thing to AHCI.

Im wondering if because the old HDD was written on MBR WIN XP with i Assmue IDE (instead of AHCI) that Win 7 cant read it. Ive tried switching in the bios from AHCI to IDE but then the bios cant see my AHCI SSD (which has the OS). Strange thing is though win 7 did have a popup saying installing new hardware and it said it was installing ATA channel 3. But even after this finished the old hdd wasnt viewable on disk management, my computer or bios.

I really need the data off that old drive. Is my only recourse putting it back in the win xp machine and transfering 8gb a time with usb stick.

thanks

You could turn it in to a usb hard drive with something like this http://ncix.com/products/?sku=36790&promoid=1337 and transfer them to your new rig this way. Sounds like you are right about the format conflict.

Asus Maximus VI Extreme, I7 4770K, NZXT Kraken X60, Kingston HyperXBeast DDR-3 2400, Sapphire 6950, NZXT Phantom 820, SanDisk 120Gb Extreme x2 in Raid, 2Tb WD Green, SeaSonic X-850 Gold
