If you have 300USD for the PC. First of all it would be helpful to know the actual specs of that machine. Do you have 8GB of RAM?

If so I'd get a R9 280 or R9 280X and a 550-600W Bronze rated PSU with a 12V sinlge rail.

Around that budget if you're looking to buy new the amd R9 280x or nvidia gtx 960 will be in your budget depending on if you have any red or green team preference. If you look into used or open box cards you could probably find an R9 290x or gtx970 for under $300

Another important thing to note (given you said its going in a tight case) is to make sure the card will fit in your case.

If you're referring to hybrid crossfire it's really not worth it. As far as bottlenecks go, you shouldn't see much with the cards that have already been mentioned. What are you looking to play or do with your build may help us point you in the right direction.
