Hey guys,

So it has occurred to me recently that a server PC should be my next major tech upgrade. I've got about 7-8 PC on a network that could really do with a central place to back-up to. I was simply going to use a NAS box for this, but then I realised I have a load of media that needs to be shared across them as well, and as a long time user of Plex, I'm now eager to build something that can handle that aspect as well. I've put together what I think should be a build suitable for the job, with the Plex server in mind (might even bung an old GPU in it to use for LAN stuff) and I was hoping some people could look over it and offer opinions.

CPU= AMD FX-8320

Mothboard= Gigabyte GA-78LMT

Memory= Kingstone Fury Black (8GB)

Storage= WD Red (2tb)

PSU= Corsair RM 450W 80+ gold

Case= Bitfenix Prodigy

Got an old SSD for the boot drive, will build up the hard drive compliment as I go (aiming for up to 8-10tb in the long term) and probably stick a AIO cooler (H55) in at some point. In short, I'll add to it as I go, so what I have now is just the starting point. Oh, and I'll probably use FreeNAS, though I do have a spare copy of Windows 8.1 lying around somewhere that could be used.

Like I say, any suggestions for improvements are gratefully received, particularly in keeping things quiet (going to have it running 24/7) and anywhere I can keep costs down.

Cheers!

how many pc's will this server be serving at one time?

and what kinda media

3-4 as a minimum, but to 8 in the long term. Looking to have enough headroom for 4 1080p movie streams (photos and bit of music as well) at once, so picked a processor that should be able to handle that level of transcoding. Could an i3 handle that?

Just go with the Fx. It'll do fine. Altough I'd consider getting a bit more powerful psu. Like 500 watt.
