Hey guys, I'm looking to build myself a NAS to house all my media without having to leaving my main PC on 24/7. I've done some digging around to get a general idea but thought I would come here for some more suggestions before pulling the trigger.

So without further adieu here's the guidelines I'm looking for:

  • Location: Canada
  • Primary use is going to be a Plex server
  • Able to transcode at least 2 1080p streams
  • Plan to use FreeNAS
  • Quiet as possible
  • Looking to make this as budget friendly as possible but will spend what is needed to get the performance necessary
  • I plan on re-purposing some hard drives I already have for now and will be upgrading to larger drives at a later date
  • was thinking mini-atx case to keep things as compact as possible

Thanks for any suggestions

I've been thinking much the same thing. Here is a build I am currently pondering, though I'm sure the lovely people on the forum may have a better suggestion :)

Note: I'm also going to repurposing an SSD as the boot drive and use FreeNAS as the OS.
