I currently have an AMD A6-6400K and I'd like to upgrade to an AMD Athlon X4 860K. Is this a good upgrade, or is there something else that's better? I don't want to buy a new motherboard, and it can't be too expensive. I don't have a specific budget so it should be around the price of the X4 860K, or a bit more. What do you think?

not much of an improvement, so might as well keep it and save up for a new build later down the road.

also pretty sure athlon isn't an apu, so if you haven't got a dedicated graphics card, that'd be on the list too. if u got a mid range gpu it should allow you to play most games at 60ish and 1080p. if thats the a6 is the quadcore apu. if not then... well.. ouch

Honestly you won't get much of an improvement. Either save up for Intel or maybe go FX but there isn't much upgrade on that either

What he said, AMD is going to (or should) update their CPU's so for now Intel is in the lead.

The time you enjoy wasting, is not wasted time.

I really hope AMD does something with their CPU's it would be refreshing to have something new.

Same, the age is starting to pack up on it's performance. I think they would do something else, cause the release is 9590 is so underwhelming.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll keep looking for something better.

My advice would be save up around $300 USD and get a 4690K or non K and get a nice H97 if you don't get a K or a Z97. It will perform much better than the AMD line and you get upgrade path ^_^

Well, the X4 860k will be a fairly good increase in performance, but you still wont be reaching performance levels that I would call "good." Honestly, I'd try and shoot for an i3 or i5, but if you cant do that, an X4 860k might hold you over for another year.
