Hey all so recently, I mean like today I built a PC for my friends, same spec's as my PC and When he downloads games from steam, like tf2 he was trying to download, it was really, really slow I mean like KBp/s. It almost took him four hours and its only a 6GB game? I just don't want to imagine what 40GB games will be like... and usually his internet speed is 7mb/s download speed? Need help on fixing this one guys any suggestions I can try?

Thanks :)

Is his region set correctly on Steam? Ask him to do a speedtest as well.

Also try and avoid HD videos and any other downloads, it could have a major effect on DL speeds.

Try selecting a different region (still close, like England) and restart steam

Also according to http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/(click on Ireland) it doesn't look like there are any problems for other users using the Ireland region

Well, the speed of the internet on Mozilla firefox and google chrome was awful but on internet explorer the speed was fast and normal so I presumed it was a compatibility issue but it shouldn't be taking him that long(4 hours) to download a 6Gb game.

It might be your ISP purposely throttling, they could be assholes like that.

Yes, I just checked there and the Speed test came back horrible with only 0.5 kbps when it should be 7-10. any ideas?

7Mbps (Mega BITS) = .87 MBps (mega BYTES)

7Mbps (Mega BITS) = 896 KBps (Kilo BYTES)

So, I dont remember what steam calculates their speeds in, but, more than likely they have it has mega BYTES and your internet speed and speedtest will show Mega BITS.

Network speed is calculated in BITS, where filesizes are calculated in BYTES.

0.5 KBPS? That's worse than dial-up!

Looks like something's up with the networking on that PC then. Check and make sure your drivers are updated to the latest.

Steam measures in Megabytes, not megabits. You keep saying he has 7 Megabits per second internet, that translates into the absolute fastest download speed steam will display is 896KBps on that internet connection, or .89 MBps

Then, you throw in he is using wifi, that will cut the speed even more (not by much, but unless he has a really good signal, it probably will). So Getting .5 MBps, or 500 KBps speeds is completely normal.

Now, if you truly are only getting .5 kbps, then yes, something is broken on his wireless card. Try plugging it directly in using ethernet just to verify if that makes a difference. However, that speed is basically zero internet traffic, I would be suprised if any webpages loaded in anything less than a few minutes. And a game would probably take a couple weeks to download at that speed.
