cpu and cooler type?

does the cpu throttle in linux? do you have a single case fan that's screaming while the others are spinning normal? are you at stock clocks for cpu, gpu, ram? what are your temps?

As for drivers on linux you need to check the forums for your distro to get specific install instructions but amd is pretty good at releasing drivers to linux.

It's an Nvidia chipset which is your first issue. They were riddled with annoying issues. But aside from that it could be dozens of things. Sounds like an issue with either memory maybe being set above what they are able to run or something getting too hot. I'd double check your heatsinks and maybe reseat memory and your video card just for good measure.

Yeah, to be honest the board could be causing the issue. I tried the 680i and the 790i boards when they were new and both were probably the most unstable boards I've used.

That being said I would go ahead and clear bios using the clr cmos jumper on the board and check that the memory is running within the rated clock, voltage, and timings in bios. The other thing would be the hdd which if you have any lying around you could try.

If you want to keep the lga 775 and ddr2 I'd scan craigslist or ebay for:

-a P35 or P45 board that's cheap, say 40-50 bucks.

-Then depending on what cpu you're using It may not hurt to grab a cheap Q6600 (you can usually find one for 35 bucks) It's not the best but it's a good quad core for the money.

So for no more than 100 bucks you could go that route but you do run the risk of using old components with unknown amounts of degradation.

If you're wanting to spend a bit and have new parts which should perform a bit better, be more efficient and last longer for about 50-60 bucks more grab:

-An intel G3258 if you live anywhere near a microcenter its $50 everywhere else seems to be about $70

-Just a basic $50 lga 1150 board. which isn't great but it's fresh caps, and usb 3, ddr3 ect.

-and 4gb of some cheap ddr3 for about $30

Everything else should be able to be transferred to your new setup depending on if your hdd is sata or ide. In which case I'd suggest finding a new one anyway, since an ide drive still running these days is basically a ticking time bomb.
